Mel Robbins on the 5-Second Rule (And It Has Nothing To Do With Food on the Floor)

I recently had the privilege and pleasure of listening to Mel Robbins offer a talk about the "5-second rule," and it is not the 5-second rule that people sometimes use to grab up a morsel of food that just hit the floor.

Mel Robbins offers that each and every one of us have 5 seconds to act on an "inspired thought." What is an "inspired thought?" An inspired thought may be one that appears unexpectedly and even fleetingly. It comes to you in the shower. Maybe it comes to you while you are driving. Or maybe it comes to you in the middle of the night. It is a thought that comes unbidden and may seem "out there," but it may continue to pop up. It feels like a nudge in a particular direction. How often do you act on it, however? Not often, I am guessing.

In her presentation which was actually entitled "How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over," Mel offers that the brain is hard wired to create all of the "reasons," i.e., "excuses" for why you shouldn't act on any particular inspired thought. Even if you are initially excited about the idea, you will almost immediately start creating all of the objections to it.

The danger is that if you don't act on the idea in the first 5 seconds, you will perhaps lose out on a wonderful opportunity.

So, I ask you, what inspired thought have you had that you have been ignoring because you have already thought of all of the reasons why it won't work? What if that thought is the reason you are here? Think about it.

Until next time.
