Welcome, from Your Career Makeover Coach!

Are you feeling the pain of teacher burnout?

Are you feeling the painful symptoms of teacher burnout?  Are you unhappy with your teaching career but don’t know where to turn? You always wanted to be a teacher, so now what? What else could you do if you don't teach?

This is some of what I hear from people who reach out to me when they start to feel the pain of teacher burnout.

If you can relate, you may be in need of the advice of a career transition and job search coach. Most teachers I know don't know anything about job searching, and they either stay stuck because they don't know where to start, or they aren't having success in their search because they are going about it all wrong.

So, let's start with whether or not you are suffering from teacher burnout.

Consider…

  1. Do dread going to work? Do you feel anxious or depressed on Sunday night before Monday morning?
  2. Do you feel stuck and unhappy because you don’t see room for advancement or promotion in your field?
  3. Do you have control over your work and your projects? Or are most important decisions made for you? Do you feel you must comply “or else?”
  4. Do you feel disillusioned because teaching isn’t what you thought it would be?
  5. Do you have trouble sleeping because you are worried about finances? Do you lose sleep over your students? Do you feel a general sense of overwhelm?
  6. Are you lacking the energy and drive you to need to be consistently productive and effective on the job? Are you just going through the motions, hanging on from vacation to vacation?
  7. Are you having physical issues such as headaches or backaches? Have you been diagnosed with gastrointestinal issues or other ailments?

If you relate to any of these questions, and you have said "yes" to even one of them, you may be experiencing teacher burnout.

And you may be ready for a career “makeover.”

makeover

Whether you find yourself in the midst of a career crisis or between jobs, you are not alone.

Many teachers feel that they are working harder, but they feel less satisfaction than ever. The hard truth is that teaching does not feel as fulfilling as it used to be. It does not feel like fun anymore, either.

Teacher burnout is on the rise. Demands on teachers continue to mount. Yet, the rewards continue to diminish.

You may wish you had made a different career choice in the first place. But you feel stuck. You don’t know how to start to make a change. You may feel trapped.

I know how you feel.

A few years ago, I found myself at a career crossroads. I left teaching after a 37-year career as both a school librarian and teacher and then President of the Virginia Education Association (2008-2012).

In the spring of 2012, I realized that I was just too tired to want to go back to the classroom. Yet, my assignment for the next year required a return to a middle school English teaching position. Yikes! I had taught middle school back when I was in my 20's and I knew that middle school was not my niche.

The truth is that every time I considered the prospect of going back, I wanted to cry.

I knew that I no longer had the physical stamina, patience, or desire to teach a full day every day.

I needed another solution.

Here was my dilemma. If teaching was no longer an option for me, what could I do instead? I possess three advanced degrees, and I am a National Board Certified Library Media Specialist. I dedicated my entire adult life to K-12 education. The thought of doing anything else felt completely foreign, to say the least.

In spite of that, I stuck to my resolve to change my career. Since leaving education, I became a Certified Life Strategies Coach. I am also a Certifed Stress Management Coach, and a Certified Holistic Life Coach. Additionally, one of the top Career Coaches in the country trained me on career transition and job search strategy. I learned how to help other teachers transition from education into different careers.

On top of that training, I was fortunate enough to with be trained by one of the top career coaches in the country. She trained me on every aspect of career transition and job search strategy. I learned how to help other teachers transition from education into different careers.

I also learned how to help individuals in transition in other industries.

Here is a fact for you to consider seriously:  You don’t need to stay stuck in a job that no longer serves you or makes you happy. In fact, if you aren’t having fun anymore, your kids aren’t having any fun either.

I operate on the premise that work should be fulfilling and FUN!

What if your dream job were just ahead, and all you need to do is go for it?
